The struggles of fresh graduates

The Star Online: But before even getting the job, these young people will have to go through interviews and convince the prospective employers they could meet their requirements and expectations. Some will lose out because of lack of experience. But how could a new graduate not be given any opportunity to develop their professional skills in the first place? For some, rejection may even affect their confidence. They should be given the opportunity to be hired and trained so that they could learn to perform their best. For those desperate to uplift their family’s status by coming out to work and alleviating their parents’ financial burden, the task of finding a job can be daunting. Furthermore, our parents have drummed into us that education is our ticket to a better life. Indeed, many of us have studied hard for our future. Not true. Everyone goes through the same process of finding job, sending resume, attending interview. Employers never expect fresh graduates to have years of

Computer / IT specialization has the highest fresh graduate starting salary in Malaysia - JobStreet

New Strait Times: The demand for unrealistic salary and benefits are the top cited reasons given by employers on why it is hard for fresh graduates to gain employment these days. This was followed by a poor command of the English language, being choosy about the job or company, poor communication skills and an overall poor attitude. [...] “The survey disclosed that 60 per cent of fresh graduates expect a salary of RM 3,500 for their first job while 30 per cent want to be paid as high as RM6,500 in order to live comfortably. This means that there is a gap between what companies are willing to pay and what the candidates want to be paid," he said. Nothing new here, unrealistic salary and poor command of English. What is interesting is the fact that computer / IT specialization has the highest fresh graduate average salary at RM2,795, even higher than engineering, healthcare and accounting / finance. Anecdotal evidences, I know quite some friends from Computer / IT field wi

Muslims more highly educated than non-Muslims in Malaysia - Pew Research Centre

Muslim men in Malaysia receive on average 10.6 years of formal education and significantly above the national average Malay Mail Online: KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19 — Muslims have more formal schooling in Malaysia compared to those of other faiths, a Pew Research Centre study showed. The survey by the global pollster found that Muslim men had the most education, but also found that younger Muslim women in Malaysia are now more likely to have post-secondary degrees compared to young Muslim men, as Muslim women globally close the gender gap. “In higher education, the gender gap among Muslims has narrowed by 3 percentage points over generations,” said the survey released last week. “Not only that, but in some countries, the gender gap has reversed among the youngest Muslims  — meaning that young Muslim women are now more likely than young Muslim men to have post-secondary degrees,” it added, naming Malaysia as an example. Muslim men in Malaysia receive on average 10.6 years of forma

71-year-old IIUM Law Student is the Perfect Example of Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learning: Syed Mansor chatting with a fellow university student at the IIUM campus in Kuala Lumpur.  The Star Online: After decades of toiling round the clock and raising a family, most retirees would prefer to sit back and relax. But 71-year-old Syed Mansor Syed Salim has decided to go back to school to follow his dream of becoming a lawyer. “Education does not end when you reach 40 or 50, it is a journey of lifelong learning. “It’s not going to be easy, but this is where my passion lies,” said Syed Mansor, who is in his first semester reading law at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). “With all the turmoil that is going on, law teaches us to see what is legally right and what is legally wrong, as well as to be fair, reasonable, and equitable; this is why I want to study it,” said the retired Kedah state land officer. A law degree will be another feather in his cap. He obtained a degree in public administration from Universiti Utara Malaysia

UTM Researchers Built Environmental Friendly House with Home Automation System

The Star Online: In an effort to help save the environment, a group of 20 researchers from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has built an environmental friendly house at the Skudai campus here. The members consist of undergraduates and postgraduates who took almost a year to complete the eco-home project with the focus on energy-saving. Interesting project with real positive impact on the environment. Hopefully the university research project will be commercialised and its outcomes channeled into practical uses. Dr Muhd Zaimi said the house had a smart home automation system, where all electrical components such as fans, lights, air conditioner units and others could be controlled via a software in a smartphone. “This software is suitable for those who are busy and often forget to switch off lights, as the system can be used when one is out of the house,” he said. However, he said the software was only compatible with Android-based smartphones. Just thinking aloud: will thos

Malaysia not Ranked in Pisa Due to Deliberate Data Manipulation - MP Ong Kian Ming

Malaysiakini: Yesterday, DAP's Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming claimed Malaysia was not featured in the rankings for Mathematics, Reading and Science in the Programme for International Student Assessment 2015 (Pisa 2015) report. Then, the Education Ministry issued a statement, insisting that Malaysia did indeed appear in the report. So, who's telling the truth and who's not? In simple words, both are correct: Malaysia did appear in the Pisa 2015 report, but it was not ranked with the other countries due to bungled data submitted. Here's a breakdown of what happened. How did it start? It began with Education Ministry deputy director-general Amin Senin proudly announcing that Malaysia had improved its performance in Pisa 2015 on Wednesday. He pointed out Malaysia's score for Mathematics had increased from 404 to 421 while the score for Reading improved from 398 to 414 and Science from 420 to 422 as compared to Pisa 2012. What did DAP MP Ong Kian Ming say?

MUET set to be recognized globally - MPM

Malay Mail Online: The Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC) wants to make the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) of similar standard with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Its chairman, Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said to achieve the standard, they have roped in a team from Cambridge English Language, England, to assist the MUET Syllabus and Specification Committee. “MEC hopes the new MUET will meet the CEFR standard and can be marketed to foreign students wishing to study in Malaysia. “The Cambridge English Language report shows that MUET is of similar standard to CEFR,” he told a press conference on MUET, STPM and Malay Language Proficiency Certification Test for Non-Malaysians (MLPCT), here today. Looks like the  Malaysian University English Test (MUET) is set to become an internationally-recognised English qualification in no less than 2 years. If MEC (or Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia, MPM) manage to pull this together, it could be a g

The New Strait Times: At least 10 pupils and teachers from SRJKC Jit Sin, Bukit Mertajam, Penang were injured when the bus they were travelling in, rammed into one of the toll booth’s divider at the Ipoh (South) Toll Plaza here today. In the 5pm incident, the bus carrying 33 pupils and four teachers were on their way back to Penang from a school trip to Malacca and the Cameron Highlands. A teacher, Ng Kim Pee, 56, said she was so shocked when the bus driver suddenly screamed, exclaiming that the

1BestariNet "Failed" Project Giving Out Free YES Mobile Phones to Teachers

Malaysiakini: The Education Ministry has rolled out the second phase of 1BestariNet, described by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) as a "failed" project, which will see 138,820 Altitude smartphones by Yes 4G distributed to teachers. According to an Education Ministry circular to state education departments, the 138,820 Altitutde smartphones would be distributed to teachers in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Malacca, Penang, Kedah and Perlis between October and December. In Selangor, the devices were distributed in a number of special ceremonies attended by political leaders. Previously, the PAC in its proceedings had branded the 1BestariNet project a failure and questioned why the government was extending the contract. The Education Ministry planned for the project to run for 15 years at a cost of RM4.077 billion. Why would a teacher need a mobile phone? Don't they already have their own smartphones? What they need instead is reliable and fast internet c

Auditor-General to Audit 1BestariNet programme

Malay Mail Online: The Auditor-General (A-G) will conduct a follow-up audit on the Education Ministry’s RM 4.1 billion 1BestariNet programme nationwide as concerns about the programme remain within both the audit department and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). “We have decided that the A-G will make a follow-up audit and PAC members will visit the schools ourselves,” PAC chairman Datuk Seri Hasan Ariffin said during a press conference today after the A-G’s briefed to PAC on its latest report tabled in Parliament today. [...] The cost for the first phase was RM663 million, but the programme was plagued by bad performance complaints from teachers and other stakeholders, Hasan said. The PAC previously conducted its own inquiry into the programme after the A-G highlighted the delay in the programme’s implementation in the 2013 Audit Report. In its report on the 1BestariNet probe tabled to Parliament in October this year, PAC urged a review for the whole programme due to the

Tips for UK-bound Malaysian students - star DJ Goldierocks

Navigating a new city can be daunting particularly if you are a student. International broadcast star DJ Goldierocks, a.k.a. Sam Hall, who was in Kuala Lumpur recently for The GREAT Britain Festival, shares with British Airways some rock solid tips on how Malaysian students can hit the ground running when they land in the UK. An alumnae of Goldsmiths, University London, DJ Goldierocks said, “Get an Oyster Card as soon as you land in London. It definitely helps you to save a lot on transportation cost.  Also, take the bus when you travel in London as this is the best way to understand the city. More importantly, embrace independence! There are lots of awesome things to do in the UK. You can explore the food markets and restaurants, or buy vintage clothes at the boutiques during the weekends. I can spend all day eating at Borough Market!” DJ Goldierocks also shared her “must-go” places in the UK with students from Malaysia. 1. Bestival Festival, Isle of Wight “Bestival Festi

PAC to look into 1BestariNet's doubtful expenditure

The New Strait Times Online: There are three phases to the project, with the first implemented under a two-year, six-month contract that ended in June 2014. Last year, PAC contended the ministry’s request to push forward the second phase claiming that the first phase had failed. Two years after its implementation, the Auditor-General’s Report 2013 stated that the project had not achieved its objectives of providing high-speed 4G broadband and the VLE platform to schools nationwide. From a total of 89.1 per cent of the 48 schools tested, including feedback from 70.3 per cent of 491 schools, it stated that the broadband access was unsatisfactory. Additionally, 58 per cent of 501 schools said the 1BestariNet access did not cover the entire school area. There was also a delay in installing Internet services. By the end of 2014, while 8,886 schools nationwide were provided with broadband connectivity, another 1,003 were connected through interim Internet services provided by other t

Yayasan Sime Darby Funds First-Ever Sudirman Scholarship

Scholarship to commemorate Sudirman and aid an underprivileged student to hone vocal performance Kuala Lumpur, 7 November 2016 – Music legend the late Dato’ Sudirman Arshad was talented beyond measure, an iconoclast who captivated Malaysia with his unique voice and striking stage persona. In 1989, a young, diminutive Sudirman stepped onto the world stage during the Asian Music Awards at the Royal Albert Hall, London, and defied expectations, clinching the Best Asian Performer award. A symbol of bearing the Malaysian flag proudly, he united Malaysians regardless of race or religion through his voice and melodies. In memory of Sudirman, The Actors Studio, with the help of Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD), has established the Sudirman Scholarship to commemorate 25 years since the passing of the Malaysian music legend. The scholarship will be awarded next year to an outstanding young talent to pursue a degree in vocal performance at a local university. The Actors Studio Co-Founder and

40% PTPTN loan defaulters have not repaid a single sen after completing their studies

Malaysiakini: A total of 753,058 former students who took loans from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) have not repaid a sen, resulting in them owing RM5.191 billion to the corporation, Higher Education Minister Idris Jusoh told Parliament. Replying to a question from Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (BN-Setiu), who asked how many defaulters had not repaid a sen to PTPTN, Idris replied that as of Aug 31, this year, a total of 1,917,033 students who took the loans had completed their studies. “A total of RM18.311 billion was supposed to be collected from the former students. “However, out of that total number, only 1,163,975 paid their dues, resulting in RM9.6 billion collected,” the minister replied. To put the numbers in perspective, 60.7% (1,163,975) students have paid their dues, while the remaining 39.3% (753,058) loan defaulters have not repaid a single sen. The number is rather staggering, considering PTPTN has and will continue to bar loan defaulters t

Teachers Transferred After Allegedly Molesting Students

The Star Online: The primary school teacher, who allegedly molested nine students at a school in Hulu Selangor earlier this year, has been transferred to another school. Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the teacher was moved out from the Tamil school concerned and is being “monitored” by the district and state education officers. This makes no sense. Why would the alleged molester be transferred to other school instead of being fired straight away? If the case is still pending ongoing investigation, the alleged molester should be on leave or suspended pending investigation result instead of being sent away. It is not hard to predict the alleged molester will commit the same child sexual abuse crime again at the new school. Mahdzir said a total of 15 reports of teachers molesting students were made between 2010 and October this year at district and state education offices, including the ministry. He said the teachers involved had been transferred to other sch

PTPTN discount incentives announced in Malaysia budget 2017 will increase loan repayment rates

Siaran Media Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN): 7.

Thoughts on Kad Debit Siswa 1Malaysia / Malaysia Student Debit Card Announced in Malaysia Budget 2017

The Star Online: FINALLY, we’re allowed to use our money for more than just books, say students. This was the sentiment of students interviewed about the RM250 student debit card which replaces the 1Malaysia Book Voucher scheme. The debit card can be used for the purchase of books, computer accessories and Internet access. It is expected to benefit 1.3 million tertiary students. While the amount of RM250 remains unchanged, this is really a good improvement from BB1M book vouchers handed out in the past years as 1Malaysia Student Debit Card (Kad Debit Siswa 1Malaysia) should benefit students who don't read book or magazine to utilize RM250 on mobile Internet data plans and external hard disks or flash pen drives etc. Without further details, it is unclear if the debit card can be used to buy anything the student desires, as the debit card is probably reloadable / rechargeable MasterCard or Visa card with RM250 value. If this is in fact the case, then the debit card is

Only 410 out of 2,000 merchants still interested to partner with KADS1M - KPDNKK Minister

Setakat ini, katanya, hanya 410 daripada kira-kira 2,000 syarikat yang masih meneruskan tawaran untuk memberi diskaun kepada pemegang KADS1M. 1Malaysia Student Discount Card (Kad Diskaun Siswa 1Malaysia or KADS1M) is a good government initiative to get more useful discounts for students. However it is also one of the many failed government projects due to failed execution . In fact, it always appears to me that KADS1M has abandoned its website with no update on the merchant list for quite some time.

No Discount for 2 Million Students with 1Malaysia Student Discount Card (Kad Diskaun Siswa 1Malaysia or KADS1M)

Public universities hit hard by 2017 Malaysia budget cuts

New Strait Times Online: KUALA LUMPUR: Public universities are crying out for help as they struggle to sustain their operations. Citing significant cuts to their operational budgets as the main source of their current woes, they are pleading against any more slashes to the government’s allocation for public universities in the 2017 Budget, as further cuts would pose a systemic threat to the institutions and their core functions. University heads whom the New Straits Times spoke to, some on record, others choosing to present their case “off-the-record”, said the cuts that they were slapped with last year alone had led to a host of problems, which caused massive adverse cascading effects. Their cases were supported by the Malaysian Academic Associations Congress (MAAC), which said many faculties had seen scores of their researchers abandoning their studies. This, the congress said, was not only because of the tight university budgets currently available to them, but there was
