Start of 2015 School Session Postponed One Week Due to Floods - Muhyiddin

Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today made the following announcement:
Malaysian schools will open a week later by January 11 in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu while it is January 12 for all other states due to the worst floods to hit the country.[...]

He said the postponement was also to allow teachers, parents and students who were affected by floods to recover and prepare for school.

"If the situation is resolved early, then the school management should use this period to clean up the affected schools to ensure that our children can learn in a safe, comfortable environment," he said. Yay, one more week of relaxing school holidays!

Form Six Students Can Now Wear Casual, School Uniform Optional

This is definitely great news to sixth formers!!! But the question now is, what should I wear for Monday, Tuesday... :-) The Star Online:
After weeks of speculation, the Education Ministry has confirmed that students enrolling in Form Six will be allowed to use traditional outfits or other apparel as part of their school dress code when they begin the new term in a fortnight.

They will also be allowed to wear batik attire to school under a move by the ministry to “re-brand” Form Six.

Education Ministry director-general Datuk Seri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof said schools can no longer compel Form Six students to wear a standard attire.

Male students will also be allowed to wear light-coloured shirts and slacks to school, but these should not have floral or other designs.

“Although they are free to choose the colour of their shirts, these should not have designs other than stripes or checked designs which are fine,” he said in a directive to all schools.

Although it was not stated in the di…

NUS Law Professor in the Sex for Grades Scandal is a Malaysian

The Malaysian Insider:
A Malaysian law professor, embroiled in a sex-for-grades scandal, has lost his bid to have his Singapore permanent resident status reviewed after it was revoked last year, reports The Straits Times today.

Tey Tsun Hang lost his PR status when he left the country without a re-entry permit (REP).

The former National University of Singapore (NUS) lecturer had been convicted in June 2013 of corruptly obtaining sex and gifts, including a Mont Blanc pen and an iPod, from his former student Darinne Ko, as an inducement to give her better grades. What a coincidence that Alvin Tan from the sex blogger scandal was also a Malaysian law student at NUS.

Muhyiddin: PTPTN defaulters costing new borrowers

Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says the government's decision to reduce the amount of new loans given by the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) is to cope with the growing number of applications and poor repayment by previous borrowers. Kegagalan bayar, punca k'jaan kurangkan pinjaman PTPTN Menjawan soalan Lim Guan Eng (DAP - Bagan), Timbalan Perdana Menteri Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin memaklumkan tindakan kerajaan mengurangkan jumlah pinjaman Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN) adalah kerana jumlah permohonan yang semakin ramai.

Bagaimanapun, katanya yang juga adalah menteri pelajaran, sebab utama adalah kegagalan sebilangan besar peminjam membayar balik menyebabkan tabungan sedia ada tidak dapat bertahan.

PTPTN Cuts Down Student Loan Amount 5% (Public Universities/IPTA) to 15% (Private Universities/IPTS) with Immediate Effect

Sin Chew Daily:National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) announced the adjustment of the amount of student loans, and the study loan amount will be reduced by 5% for all students in public universities, while 15% for private tertiary students with immediate effect.

Medical courses are not affected by this change. This was reportedly due to government's understanding that tuition fees of medical courses are expensive, hence no adjustment to the student study loan amount. The justification for this change (which has been in effect since 1st November 2014) was reportedly to benefit more students as more students will have their PTPTN study loan application accepted. The most impacted students will be those studying and staying in Klang Valley such as undergraduates from University of Malaya, KL due to the rising cost of living. A better and more rational change would be to offer different study loan amount according to different tier of city, town, rural etc.

Reason Why UM & UKM Choose Not to be Ranked in Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings

The Malaysian Insider:Two top Malaysian institutions, Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), did not submit data for the annual World University Rankings 2014-2015, effectively missing out on the opportunity to be assessed against other universities in the world, says a global education index compiler. [...]

UKM's Strategic Centre deputy executive director (performance assessment) Associate Professor Dr Masturah Markom told The Malaysian Insider that the university preferred to focus on rankings that were fair to its direction.

"This ranking (THE) has different indicators and it's more suitable for universities that have been established far longer.

"Indicators, such as 'industry income', are unfair to us as Malaysia's (industry income) is not as much as in the United States, for example. We cannot compete with them so it is best if we spend on rankings that are better suited to our direction and focus," she said, referr…
