Better-educated Malaysians won’t struggle with higher living costs - Najib

Malay Mail Online: Malaysians who have higher academic qualifications are unlikely to struggle with higher living costs, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today. He added that most Malaysians struggling now is because they only have formal schooling up to SPM or Form Five at most and lacked skills that could land them better-paying jobs. “One of the biggest reasons for high living costs pressures is because the people still have low education levels. “If we only have SPM qualification and do not have a diploma, degree or skills, we won't be able to get jobs that pay well,” Najib said in the Dewan Rakyat. One crucial fact he forgot to mention yet everyone knows better than him: GST's implementation is the direct factor contributing to the recent rise in living costs.

Erican Professional Upskilling of English Language Teachers (Pro-ELT) programme The Star Online: The 15,000 English teachers, who were found ill-equipped to teach the subject, have been sent for training, said Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon. “We have been sending these teachers for training since 2013,” said Chong, referring to the Professional Upskilling of English Language Teachers (Pro-ELT) programme. Teachers who failed to obtain the desired scores in the Cambridge Placement Test and British Council’s Aptis English test, he said, would be sent to training for six months. How did these English teacher graduates and get hired as English teachers in the first place? Several local Malay dailies reported today Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) as saying that the kit, which took three years to produce, was created to address hysteria afflicting young students, typically a condition of exaggerated or uncontrollable emotions.[...] This is not the first time UMP has snatched headlines for its apparent interest and research in supernatural elements. It was an old news items but recently was widely shared on social media. MP Wanted Matriculation to be Terminated

Update April 2016: PSD has just announced that 250 KPM Bursary scholarships with be offered for SPM 2015 students with 9A+ and above for local studies . This is the last year of KPM Bursary for SPM students. Next year onwards there will not be any KPM Bursary for SPM 2016 students. Four government / JPA scholarship programmes are specifically highlighted by the Finance Minister in his speech: Program Biasiswa Nasional 2016 Top 20 SPM students will be sponsored to the top universities overseas. Take SPM Sesusasteraan Cina for Easier A+ Urges Deputy Education Minister II

The Star Online: Chinese students are encouraged to take the SPM Chinese Literature papers, which is deemed easier to score compared to the Chinese Language subject. Deputy Education Minister II Chong Sin Woon (pic) said Chinese Literature was not popular among the students due to the lack of attention given to the subject. However, he considered the subject an easier one to score A+ because students only have to study several books. The SPM A+ mentality, reinforced by Malaysia Deputy Education Minister. While promoting students to take a less popular subject is not necessary a bad thing, the argument that SPM Sesusasteraan Cina is easier than SPM Bahasa Cina because you just need to "study several books" is not only less convincing but also problematic.

The Star Online: A total of 9,721 candidates obtained excellent results (Grade A+, A, A-) in all subjects in the 2015 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, but the overall number fell by 0.25% from 11,289 candidates in 2014. Education director-general Datuk Seri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof said the index used to indicate the performance of candidates, the national average grade (GPN), saw a drop for 2015 by 0.07 to 5.15 compared with 5.08 in 2014. A note on national average grade (GPN) : The lower GPN indicates better performance. “The smaller number of candidates who obtained excellent results in all subjects and the drop in GPN is not a significant shortcoming. It is within the permitted range of 3%,” he said at a press conference announcing the analysis of the 2015 SPM results, here, Wednesday. “It also reflects the fluctuations in student performance. The drop is also indicative of the smaller number of candidates who sat for the 2015 SPM, at 440,682 compared with 455,8
