Call For Effective Solutions To University Placement Issue

Bernama: The issue involving excellent students who failed to secure places in public universities each year must be resolved in an effective manner to prevent recurrence. National Professors' Council education and human capital development cluster chief Professor Datuk Dr Zakaria Kasa said this was vital if Malaysia was serious in achieving the vision of becoming international higher education excellence centre by the year 2020. "How can we take more international students when our excellent ones can't even secure places in local universities?" he said when contacted by Bernama here today. [...] In this context, Zakaria said the government should consider using a certain mechanism in providing sufficient places, including by giving financial aid to the students to pursue their studies in private institutions of higher learning (IPTS). "We have to understand that besides being well-established institutions, the other reason for these students wanting to en

Common University Entrance Exam? Matriculation or STPM, Not Both

Bernama: Is it time for the Ministry of Education to seriously consider having a common university entrance exam as a long term solution to the problem of top scorers not obtaining places in local universities? Gerakan Education Bureau chairman Lau Chin Hoon certainly thinks so on the basis that the present dual system for entry, namely the STPM and matriculation, has become a source of discontentment for some despite a more merit based intake. "A 4.0 CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) in matriculation and a 4.0 CGPA in STPM is simply not on the same level. In terms of parameter procedure they are two entirely different examinations. That is why, we should standardise to a single entrance exam," he explained. This is due to the fact that the STPM is affiliated with the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate while the matriculation is based on a combination of coursework, examination and lecturer evaluation. He said without a unified entrance exam people would always

Teach for Malaysia Confession: A Vocation Like No Other

R. Nadeswaran wrote on the Sun Daily: Without the hard work and toil by teachers, we would have had a soulless society. They are the backbone of a nation – responsible for moulding the minds of students and shaping their future. If there were no teachers, our society wouldn't have progressed. They are the ones who educate the society and make us all better human beings. Knowledge, patience and courage are some of the more required qualities of teachers. When teachers take on children of different backgrounds and teach them the basics of life and make them better human beings, they play several other roles. Ever since receiving the email which was forwarded over the weekend, I have been wondering if it ought to be replied and what kind of advice ought to be offered to the writer. I have personal attachments and sentiments for the Teach for Malaysia (TFM) programme which was launched by a small group of young graduates three years ago. Alina Amir, a TFM teacher poured her h

Bernama: Police will record statements from all individuals involved in the alleged rape case reported at the sports village in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) last Wednesday. Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin said investigation was in progress and statements from those concerned would be taken to facilitate the investigation. News report said that the drunk victim claimed that she was gang raped by three SUKMA athletes at UPM Sport Village. Be careful ladies, university is never a safe heaven, especially when alcoholic drinks were involved.

Malaysia Matriculation Programme - Meritocracy Within Quota

Bernama: The selection of students for the Education Ministry's matriculation programme is implemented in accordance with meritocracy based on the calculation of merit points. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the merit points were calculated based on the combination of 90 per cent for academic achievement and 10 per cent for co-curricular participation. Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the selection of students was done through computer screening based on the correct and complete information received from them in their applications. [...] Muhyiddin said the matriculation programme was not exclusively for Bumiputera students, but was also open to non-Bumiputera students with a quota of 10 per cent allocated since 2003. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who is also Education Minister proudly claimed that selection of students for matriculation programme are based on meritocracy. Perhaps he meant the hybrid "meritocracy within

Graduates Had Little or No Hands-on Industry Knowledge - Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir

Bernama: The gap between graduates' knowledge and industrial needs must be addressed by industry players and educational institutions so that graduates can meet the needs of all industries, says a prominent corporate figure. SapuraKenchana Petroleum executive vice-chairman Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir said many well known universities produced graduates but most did not have what was needed to excel in their careers. [...] "There is high demand for engineers in the oil and gas industry but not many graduates are willing to get their hands dirty but instead prefer office work." This is indeed very true nowadays. What the students learn in the university are usually too general. When the graduates start to work, they usually experience a difficult time overcoming the stiff learning curve due to lack of domain knowledge of the specific industry. Time for revamp of degree curriculum to include current industry needs and knowledge.

Many Students Not Knowledgeable In History Despite Scoring 'A' In Exams - Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim

Bernama: The renowned academician said many of them not only failed to appreciate but also failed to learn about the country's fascinating history. [...] Khoo also lamented that today's examination and result-oriented education system had changed the way students were being educated, where many of them studied by memorising and not learning by understanding. [...] "Many schoolchildren just memorise essays because they can more or less spot the topics that will come out (in the examinations)," he said. Khoo said teachers should also re-evaluate their role and be effective educators who could work with students to develop their minds instead of just helping them to score 'A' in the examinations. "I hope our education can help the young to know more about the country, to love the country and be able to do more good for the country," he added. Well said, Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim.

Don't Bring Politics Into Education - Mary Yap

Bernama: Newly-appointed Deputy Education Minister Datuk Mary Yap today said she was committed to ensure that the Education Ministry was free from politics. She said such a commitment was vital as she viewed the widespread of negative sentiments that influence the younger generation to not appreciate the efforts of the government, as really alarming. "As an educationist and deputy minister, I don't like to bring in politics into education because here we are educating the younger generation. "It worries me to find out that the culture of getting our younger generation to not appreciate what the government was doing and that is really alarming but I would not want to comment on that matter," she said when asked whether she regarded herself as a Chinese leader for Barisan Nasional (BN) and her views on a report by a Malay daily recently asking "What More The Chinese Want?".[...] "I have worked in the Ministry of Education for the past 36 years,

Book: University of Malaya 1949-1985: Its Establishment, Growth and Development

Bernama: University of Malaya (UM) set history in motion when its chairman, Tan Sri Arshad Ayub, launched a book on its historical chronology here Wednesday. The book, 'University of Malaya 1949-1985: Its Establishment, Growth and Development', is based on past records, personal observation and recollection of its former registrar, Lim Chung Tat.[...] Arshad said: "We are thankful and appreciate Lim's work because by knowing our history, we will be able to understand the present and prepare for a better future." During the book launch at the university campus in Petaling Jaya Wednesday, Arshad praised Lim's dedication in writting the book despite his disabilities. "His lack of hearing, eye sight and limited ability to type did not stop him from writing the book and sharing his experience with the younger generation," he said. Meanwhile, Lim, 83, said the 465-page book was written to give recognition to those who had contributed to the de

13th Malaysia General Election (GE13): UM Student to Challenge Najib for Pekan Seat

Mohamed Bukhairy Sofian / Pic Credit The Star Online: A 23-year-old Universiti Malaya student will challenge Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for the Pekan parliamentary seat in the 13th general election. Gerakan Mahasiswa PRU13 (GM13), a coalition of student groups, will field political science student Mohamed Bukhairy Sofian as an independent candidate.[...] [T]he student manifesto outlines eight main points, including full autonomy for local universities, academic freedom, free education at the tertiary level, and that students are allowed to manage their own affairs. Finally, we have our first undergraduate contesting in general election even though his chance of winning is so slim.

13th Malaysia General Election (GE13): Abolishment of PTPTN

Bernama: The opposition's plan to introduce free tertiary education as stated in their election manifesto will be difficult to realise as it will have a big implication on the government's finances. Among others, the opposition coalition hopes to scrap fees for public university education, give subsidised fees to private university students, provide cost of living allowance to public university students and abolish the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN). In reality, the abolishment of PTPTN will cause the government to owe financial institutions RM26.9 billion and funding costs of RM10.8 billion. Repayment of RM3.8 billion received until Jan 31 this year would also need to be returned to borrowers. Former Education Director-General Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said the private sector needed funds obtained through fees imposed on their students to run their institutions. So the logic of students taking PTPTN education loan is to give profits to private educat

13th Malaysia General Election (GE13): RM20 Million Gift to Tamil Schools

Bernama: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has approved yet another allocation, of RM20 million, to build or repair 13 fully-aided national type Tamil schools nationwide, said the coordinator for the Action Plan for Future of Tamil Schools, Prof Dr N.S. Rajendran. The allocation, given last week, was to cater to the urgent need for infrastructure development of the schools, he said, but did not identify the schools. The fund was over and above the RM100-million allocation given under Budget 2013, he added. In the 2013 budget, Najib, who is also the finance minister, had provided an additional special allocation of RM100 million for national type Tamil schools for new sites, additional school blocks and upgrading work. Since 2009, the Barisan Nasional (BN) government had allocated a total of RM540 million for Tamil schools, Rajendran told Bernama in an interview at his office, recently. He said that for the first time, the prime minister had agreed to hand over the allocat

Muhyiddin: No Need to Despair for Those Not Achieving Their Aspired SPM Results

Bernama: To those who did not achieve the results as they had aspired, Muhyiddin said, there was no need to despair, but they should use the outcome as a motivation to become successful. "Your ambition does not stop with the results of the SPM, it is a beginning to a longer journey, there are many more opportunities and successes awaiting you after this," he added. Well said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Education Minister. Not getting your expected SPM results is not the end of your world. If you did not do well in your SPM, there is always opportunities for you to do better in STPM, matriculation, university and ultimately in your working life after university years.

STPM Results: Higher Perfect Score

While students are allowed to take up to five subjects for the STPM, their CGPA scores are calculated based on scores received for the best four subjects including General Studies. Malaysian Examinations Council chairman Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Noh Dalimin said the number of students who scored 5As increased to 18 candidates from 12 in 2011. “The total number of candidates who passed all their papers in five or four subjects improved too from 23,246 candidates (45.9%) in 2011 to 24,488 candidates (47.4%) in 2012. “There was also an improvement in the number of government school candidates who passed all their papers for five or four subjects, that is 23,683 (49.

"The first semester results under the new format will be released this Thursday. I think the students did much better than we expected. "But it would not be fair to compare these semester results to t

SPM Maximum 10 Subjects

The Star Online: The 10-subject limit for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students stays, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. The Government’s objective is for students to focus on the main subjects as well as to make it easier for teachers to guide them, he said, adding that previously, students had the liberty to take 15 to 20 subjects but this was disallowed two years ago. “So far, we see that this (taking only 10 subjects) is okay,” Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said at a forum for 2,300 Islamic religious teachers from the northern region at Universiti Sains Malaysia here yesterday. He was responding to a suggestion from the floor for the Government to allow SPM students, particularly those taking Islamic studies, to choose more than 10 subjects so that they could also take up science subjects for better education prospects. Muhyiddin acknowledged the constraints faced by such students and indicated the matter would be considered. “What we are w

SPM English Compulsory Pass Subject Earliest in SPM 2016

SPM English Compulsory Pass Subject Earliest in SPM 2016 / Pic Credit The Star Online: The proposal to make English a compulsory pass subject in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination could be implemented as early as 2016, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Friday. Students who fail English will not receive their full certificate but will have the opportunity to re-sit the paper in July the following year, soon after the SPM results are released. Muhyiddin said in preparation for this, the Education Ministry had started training 61,000 English teachers to be more proficient in the language. He said many parties had also responded positively to this when he first mooted the idea several years ago. "I don't see why this cannot be done by then since many people, including parents, are supportive of the proposal. "I have also been reading letters sent to newspapers where many parents have endorsed this (proposal). In fact, many want th

Malaysian University Not Even Top 400 of Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012-2013

Lim Kit Siang: In Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2012-2013, for the second consecutive year, not a single Malaysian university is included in its 400 Top World University rankings. The THE World University Rankings 2012-2013 is a sad but salutary warning to Malaysians about the four-year failure of Najib’s transformation programmes, with Malaysia completely excluded from the Asia-Pacific phenomenon highlighted by the THE World University Rankings 2012-2013 on the “the rise of Asia-Pacific Universities”. An insightful comment from sheriff singh: In fact MU and UKM are boycotting THES’ rankings as they feel the rankings are not fair. They say THES places a lot of weight on academic performance which our universities are sorely lacking scoring only 5 out of 100 points (5%). Our local universities only score highly on the number of foreign students admitted and the number of foreign lecturers on their teaching staff and the ratio thereof and on physical faci

If the senior students in the videos are indeed from UiTM, then they are really sick! Police report should be made and legal actions should be taken against them.

Chinese Primary School Students Burdened with Difficult Homework

The Star Online: CHINESE primary school students are so burdened with homework that their mothers, aunts and other family members are helping out, reported China Press. He added that not only him but several other university lecturers also had a similar experience while guiding their grandchildren with their homework. “We would make mistakes like the strokes and pronunciation. “Schools need to look into improving teaching methods as well as reducing the students' homework load.” He noted that most children go for tuition and they do not have time to digest what they learn. I went to a Chinese primary school, other than the difficulty of homework highlighted in the article above, the excessive amount of homework is also a big issue and very burdensome

Teachers Cannot Teach Students to Hate the Government

Bernama: Teachers wishing to be involved in politics or general election campaigning are advised not to abuse the privilege by doing so within school compounds or during classes. Education Deputy Minister Dr Puad Zarkashi said they must also obtain permission from the Ministry. "The government has allowed it but they must obtain permission from the Ministry, as announced by the Prime Minister. "We will not allow any political activities in schools and they cannot teach students to hate the government," he told reporters after presenting the Rembau Department of Education Excellence Awards, here Thursday. Will Ministry of Education grant permission to teachers who choose to support the opposition parties?
