What is UM AppStorm Grand Challenge?
Open to all Research Assistants (RA), Undergraduate and Postgraduate students of
Malaysian Universities, we are looking for you! This challenge is the
path to successful innovation, a greater challenge would be to meet the
demands of the market with your innovative mobile applications. We are
challenging YOU to make a difference to the generation of smartphones,
make a mobile application that is a MUST HAVE to the mass market. Your
idea can become the next big thing, a much sort after mobile application
that will be used by Smartphone users in Malaysia and around the world.
This challenge will bridge the gap between education and the real
world; it will give you the necessary exposures that will value add to
your career.
The Objective
The
gap between academic and job market has been a concern among graduates,
employers and educators for some time. UMCIC is making the initiative
to bridge this gap by tapping into the budding talents and matching
their apps to market contents.
UM AppStorm Grand Challenge aims primarily to channel creativity and innovation into usable apps.
The
grand prize for UM AppStorm Grand Challenge is an opportunity to be
part of Student Entrepreneurship Program*. This program will give a
platform to University students to pursue their creativity and talents
in the lucrative IT business.
It
is our hope that UM AppStorm Grand Challenge event will lead to the
creation of our own world class Intellectual Property Rights apps.
At
University of Malaya (UM), we make it our business to advance knowledge
and learning through quality research and education for the nation and
for humanity. Through UM AppStorm Grand Challenge, we make this mission a
reality.
The Challenge
1. Innovate a fitness and wellness application in iOS or Android platform.
2. Your
application must put to good use the data collected from either the
smartphone sensor or the 3D Bluetooth 4.0 Wristband Activity Tracker
& API Pack, depending on your chosen category.
3. This is a skill based challenge with the aim to bridge the gap between innovation and marketability.
4. Eligible participants will create original mobile applications around the device provided in their chosen application platform.
5. Applications with highest score, subject to a minimum of > 80 points, based on pre-set judging criteria wins.
The prizes for the UM AppStorm Grand Challenge are as listed in the table below. If the participating team is in a group, only one prize unit will be given, however all team members in the group will get a Certificate of Merit.

How To Register?
STEP 1: Visit http://umappstorm.eventbrite.com to get started. Register online at event website, select your preferred Category
Category 1
- Create a mobile application related to fitness and wellness
- Your mobile application must incorporate the use of the available sensors in a smartphone such as camera (heart rate, emotion, augmented reality), GPS (navigation), Motion sensor, etc
Category 2
- Create a mobile application related to fitness and wellness
- Your mobile application must be integrated to the 3D Bluetooth 4.0 Wristband Activity Tracker & API Pack
- Collect 3D Bluetooth 4.0 Wristband Activity Tracker & API Pack (worth more than RM350) and return device to UM after the Grand Challenge (Limited to first 100 units only)
STEP 2: Start your journey to design the most usable and innovative fitness and wellness mobile application using the
available sensors in a smartphone such as camera (heart rate, emotion,
augmented reality), GPS (navigation), Motion sensor, etc OR data from the 3D Bluetooth 4.0 Wristband Activity Tracker using the integration API Pack.
STEP 3: Publish your completed application in either Apple's AppStore or Google's Play Store accordingly. The
bigger the public’s response to your application the more points you or
your team will gain in one of the factors of the Judging Criteria.
STEP 4: At the same time, email your published application detail together with the User Manual to the Organiser ([email protected]) before the “Submission Deadline”.
STEP 5: Shortlisted
participants will be notified to prepare for a 15 minutes Live
Presentation to the panel of Judges of UM AppStorm Grand Challenge at
University Malaya. You are allowed to present an updated version of your
mobile application (if any). Shortlisted participants will bear the
costs of transportation and accommodation on their own.
The evaluation and selection process by the panel of judges will be done on all complete submissions received.We will disqualify any incomplete or illegible entries that we receive. We are not responsible for entries that we do not receive for any reason, or for entries that we receive but are not decipherable for any reason.
Am I Eligible to Participate?
1. Open
to all Research Assistants (RA), undergraduate and postgraduate
students from Malaysian Universities (Public & Private).
2. You areat
least 17 years of age as of 1 August 2014 and are actively enrolled as a
student at any Malaysian University at any time between June 2014 to
March 2015.
3. If
you are considered a minor in your place of residence, then you should
ask your parent’s or legal guardian’s permission prior to submitting an
entry into this Competition.
4. You
and/or your team members must be a valid Research Assistants,
Undergraduate or Postgraduate students at any registered Malaysian
Universities.
5. You may participate as an individual or in a team of not more than 5 members.
6. You are not an
immediate family member of (parent, sibling, spouse/domestic partner,
child) or household member of a University Malaya’s employee.
7. Please
