UM makes influential university top 100 list:

University of Malaya (UM) has achieved its highest ranking of 87 among the world’s top higher education institutions, according to Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS) World University Rankings for 2019.

Announcing the achievement, Education Minister Maszlee Malik said eight Malaysian public and private higher education institutions were listed in the top 1,000 of the annual list. [...]

“UM has broken through the 100th position barrier in the QS World University Rankings 2019, placing it at 87 in the world compared to its previous position of 114 in 2018,” said Maszlee at a press conference at his ministry here.

The minister said Malaysian universities have managed to build a solid reputation despite the declining trend of research funding.

As a result, he said the ministry will continue to support and facilitate researchers working with international partners.

“The new Pakatan Harapan government will also keep to our promise of granting universities more autonomy.

“This is essential to help universities forge their own path and is in line with international practices,” he said.

SEOUL - From 20th January to 3rd February 2018, 35 delegates represented the University of Malaya on a student exchange program to Seoul, South Korea.

Dubbed as ICE 3.0 which stands for the International Culture and Education Exchange Programme, this is the third time the project has been successfully held under the 1st Residential College, University of Malaya. The exchange program this year is held in collaboration with Sungshin Women's University, one of the top private universities in South Korea.

Under their "2018 Winter Short-term Programme", delegates were given the opportunity to experience a variety of cultural activities such as K-pop dance, wearing the Hanbok, tea ceremony, making bibimbap and facial make-up. Delegates were also given basic Korean lessons where they learnt to read and write Korean characters, also known as Hangul.

This year, ICE aims to become agents of change by empowering youths to take the lead in environmental issues. To achieve this, delegates visited the Cheonggyecheon River in Seoul to learn more on the efforts taken by the local council in order to preserve the river. It is hoped that through this programme, delegates would be able to think outside the box, innovate and keep abreast of the current environmental issues.

When visiting the delegates, Professor Datuk Dr Rohana Yusof, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs) of University of Malaya congratulated the team and expressed her hope that the team would be able to import and incorporate those values gained from this programme in the University of Malaya.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517471716484302258.post-52268125488029828732017-12-14T14:30:00.000+08:002017-12-14T14:30:06.993+08:00Work with Startup or Established Company? What are the differences?Getting your first job can be definitely exciting, at the same time a bit nerve-wracking. Although the job security and stability an established company offers is beneficial for long-term careers, a lot of startups are competing for your attention nowadays. They believe fresh graduates are not attracted to the compartmentalized job roles seen in big corporations.

With worthwhile opportunities for neophyte job seekers, they now have the chance to improve and expand their skill set in a shorter span of time. This is especially true for most startups, as employees climb the corporate ladder faster and are assigned several different roles to determine their strengths.

However, will landing a startup job be the ideal choice for you? Figuring out the type of work environment that best suits you is just as essential as which company you want to be a part of. To help you decide which path is best for you, here are the differences between startups and established companies.

Working for a Startup

When you hear the word “startup”, you might associate it with working with a bunch of employees in their twenties, clustered together in a small office. Although this is the usual setup for many startups, the thing is – the working environment in a startup may change, which may affect an employee’s schedule.

If you decide to enter this type of work environment, here are pros and cons of working for them.

Pros

Offers a unique experience – Working in a startup will offer a unique experience of seeing the company grow and become successful. Aside from that, most startups offer a favorable work environment, with some having skateboarding hallways and gaming rooms. These amenities contribute to a stimulative workplace that fosters creativity and innovation which are essential for a company’s growth.

A casual environment – Startups are typically composed of incredibly casual people and young individuals, who are working together for the success of the business. It is the type of work environment where creativity and the culture of casualness thrive.

There’s room for improvement and learning – In a startup, you’ll start in one position and move to others after some time. For example, you’re tasked with content writing at one time and the next, you are learning marketing techniques to help out others with a similar job.

Cons

Job stability is not guaranteed – Since startups are seeds of an idea that might flourish into a successful company, they have the tendency to wilt or die. Although most startups have brilliant ideas and secure enough money to operate, without strong mentors and experienced leaders, job stability will be affected.

Demanding workload – If you decide to work for a startup, expect to be bombarded with many tasks in the day, as there are not enough staff in the company to perform all the responsibilities that need to be done each day. This can result in long work hours and a demanding workload.

Low pay - Typically, investors don’t pump most of their funds into employees’ salaries, as they are focused on the startup’s operating costs and development. For this reason, salaries tend to be lower with startups than with established companies.

Working for an Established Company

If you are an individual who doesn’t mind working in a structured and organized work environment, then an established company might be ideal for you. Your job will come with a list of very specific tasks which will be outlined for you. Although established companies are not impervious to economic ups and downs, entry-level positions are typically stable.

Apart from that, here are some points why you may or may not work for an established company.

Pros

Less Chance of Failure – There’s no such thing as a secure job these days but working for an established company is typically less precarious than a startup. Established companies have been around for years and offer greater security, allowing you to sleep better at night.

Pay is better - Big companies usually offer larger salaries than a startup. Aside from that, they can provide additional benefits to new employees such as training courses and corporate trips.

Opens more doors of opportunities – Being a part of a large, established company for at least 2 years can make a big difference in your CV, and opens a lot of doors if you move in another company within the same industry. So when looking for a new job, make sure to use this to your advantage.

Cons

Not Enough Opportunities for Growth – In an established company, higher managerial positions are already filled by employees who have been part of the organization for a long time. This is contrary to a startup where growth equates to opportunities, as the company is looking for new leaders to manage teams and processes. Typically, startups internally hire employees already on staff to fill these new positions.

Difficult to make your voice heard – When working on a team at an established company, sometimes you’ll be involved in the same project where it’s difficult to make your voice heard amongst many co-workers. That’s why it’s difficult to make yourself stand out when part of a big corporation.

Initiative isn’t rewarded or encouraged – In many established companies, employees tend to stick to their job duties and never deviate from their responsibilities. This is because initiative isn’t rewarded or encouraged in a corporate culture.

You have to consider all of the above points to help you determine which type of work environment is ideal for you. Whether you think you’ll do better in a “think-outside-the-box” culture or a structured environment, neither is better than the other. Ultimately, it boils down to your personality, financial needs, and work style to determine which work environment suits your career.
Malaysiakini reporting on the fact that the school had no permit, fire safety cert to operate at premises:

Dr Hartini Zainudin saying what needs to be said on Facebook:
I am furious and outraged.
The tragedy which unfolded and the deaths of 25 children and teachers points again to unsafe premises and again, I'm quite sure, there were no child protection policies or safety mechanisms in place.

We have shelters and day care centers so I know what are the legal safety requirements which need to be in place before we can even get a license to take in children. God forbid, we open a center without a license! We'd be liable and completely responsible for any injury or death.

Somehow ( and this is what makes me livid) we are not allowed to ask about child protection policies or safety rules and regulations if it's a religious school. Why? Why can't we ask? You take in poor children most of the times and they pay fees, no?

Don't these schools have a responsibility to the parents and families, communities and the general public? Why isn't a tahfiz school accountable to protecting children?

Are you above the law because you' re a religious school?

I'm still hurting and seething from the deaths of the 14 children and teacher from the last tragedy. The landslide that toppled that religious school.

What happened?
Nothing happened.
The school moved and reopened with no accountability and responsibility.
14 deaths.

I'm furious and outraged.

I demand a full investigation and that if precautions and safety mechanisms weren't in place, that the school be charged to the full extent of the law.

Parents should be outraged.
I cannot imagine burying your children, trapped by fire.
If it's true that the gates and doors were locked from the outside, I want a pole in a room with the the person with the key- you can lock us in from the outside!

Let me at him if justice won't be served.

Please. I beg you.
Wake up, everybody. Enough is enough. Anyone responsible for negligence, who takes in children and has no child protection policy and safety rules and regulations must be charged to the full extent of the law.

Justice here ( not in the hereafter, alone) must be served.

And stop sharing the video of the fire and photos of charred bodies. Have some respect for the dead. They deserve some dignity. Think of their families in this horrible horrible time.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517471716484302258.post-90524046100308251372017-08-08T19:21:00.001+08:002017-08-08T19:21:25.054+08:00Malaysian Students' Technology Conference (MSTC) @ Mercu UEM KL 12 & 13 August 2017

So, you’ve planned your destination, you’ve enrolled in your course and you’re getting ready to explore the Great Unknown. Now what? Well, as with all things in life, studying abroad doesn’t come without its problem. To give you a head start so you can make the best out of your experience, here is a list of common problem most migrant students face and how to deal with them effectively.

Feeling Alone

Easily the most common problem with students travelling abroad, it’s easy to feel like you’re an outsider. The people around you may be speaking another language and, until you know your way around, it can be difficult to build up the initial confidence to ask the locals any questions. It’s important to remember that, no matter what, most countries will welcome you to their country and there’s no reason to feel intimidated.

As with any change in life, you’ve stepped out of your comfort zone and it takes time to adjust to that. As soon as you begin showing your face to the people in your classes and the people you’re living with, you’ll quickly make friends and the feelings of feeling alone will quickly seem like a distant memory.

Money Issues

Moving abroad to another country, even going on holiday to another country, will present the issue with currency. For example, if you’ve travelled from the United Kingdom to America, trying to work out the Pounds to Dollars with added conversion rates can be a struggle at the best of times. The best way to approach this situation is by creating an easy conversion rate in your head. When you wake up or before you leave your house, check the current conversion rates for that day. If the rate is £1 = $1.29, round that up to $1.30 and for every $1 you spend, you’ll need to subtract £0.30. So, for every $10 you spend, you’ll need to subtract £3 from your total. This is only an estimate but it’s much easier than being completely lost in a shop without knowing what to do.

Culture Shocks

Depending on where you travel to, it’s best to research, before you go, if there are any differences in the culture of your destination which people may find offensive. For example, if you place the top side of your hand under your chin and make a flicking motion, this is considered extremely offensive to the people of France, Belgium and Italy and it could result in a huge misunderstanding. The only way you’ll find out what the differences are is by searching online. These can be easily found by searching ‘*Destination* offensive cultural gestures’.

Language Barrier

Easily the most daunting prospect of travelling abroad is the inevitable language barriers that you’ll come across. Even if you’re travelling to a country where the majority of people speak English, you’re bound to run into someone you need to speak to for something who won’t understand what you’re trying to say.

Tips for eliminating this problem abroad is to remain calm and polite and try speaking in basic English. Try to avoid using any slang you may use back home naturally and use hand gestures (remembering the consideration above). However, this problem won’t last long. Once you’re in a country, you’ll need to pick up the language to survive and this isn’t as hard as you think. Language lessons at school are nowhere near as effective as being placed in the country itself and you’ll start picking up basic bits of conversation in only a couple of days.

Becoming Homesick

One of the hardest difficulties to overcome is homesickness. Home was your comfort zone where all your family and friends are and it won’t be long before you miss them in some way or another. Don’t panic though! You don’t have to book the next flight home to conquer this issue. One of the more exciting ways to overcome this is by getting involved in the place around. Whether your friends at your university are local or not, band together and explore the place you’re in, take tours outside the city and start interacting with the place you’re in.

Once you become a bit more confident, you can start taking buses and trains to neighbouring cities on your days off. Always remember that, thanks to social media, your friends and family are never that far away and it only takes a couple of seconds to be on the phone or video calling them. Better still, invite them over to come and see you. They’ll relish the fact they can go on holiday!
This is so sickening! This teacher abuser must be sent to jailed on top of banning from ever becoming a teacher again. Glad that the parent has lodged a police report is determined that this incident must be brought to justice.
Wow, this is simply WOW! How could the headmistress of SRK Port Dickson in her right mind has the audacity to ask the parents to pity the abuser? Action speaks louder than words. Seems very likely she could be the problem in the first place for allowing such abuse and bullying culture in the school and defending such criminal action.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517471716484302258.post-34212459662491322052017-06-19T17:57:00.000+08:002017-06-19T17:59:59.444+08:00Report about Sexual Assault at University of Malaya (UM)

[Update: we do not link to the source forum post containing the leaked report as it contains the victim's full name and personal details]

From the leaked report:

I has been assaulted by another international student living in same resident on April 30 th in my room. I reported this incident to the authority in the University of Malaya called ISC, UM security, and the resident. Although I reported and I demanded for the safety of other students. Nevertheless, another incident by same person happened and that student who’s been attacked had gone back to his own country because of that. Today, I am writing this report to tell how University of Malaya treats its own international students and trying to warn others including new students coming in the future that they are not very reliable as they said “College reputation is more important than student’s safety.”

One believes that the sexual assault incident is true from reading the full report and also news on this reported by various websites (which sensationized the incident as guy on guy gay male rape) - especially the part where the Palestine student left to his country in a hurry.

As one of the victim, in this case, I demand a legal punishment towards this suspect of course, but I would also like to ask for a punishment against ISC, since they are the one who made this incident worsen to let another victim to be attacked. We would like an official apology to us from ISC and University of Malaya.

I would like to tell all the other universities around world to rethink about sending their students to this university, University of Malaya, since they cannot protect the international students properly.

Reasonable request if the International Student Centre (ISC) staff has indeed "mentioned that college face, reputation, is more important than students safety."Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517471716484302258.post-71165700282416542262017-06-01T00:00:00.000+08:002017-06-01T00:00:37.433+08:00Is the Malaysia Education System effective?

Do you think Malaysia's education system (from Form 5 to University) suits students well?

Edison Ngu on Quora:

As a Form 5 student this year, I would strongly say that the Malaysia education system is ultimately flawed. I do have one thing or two to say about it, though.

It is quite sad that to my observation, SPM (Malaysia Education Certificate/GCSE) is no far different from the ancient Chinese level one general exam.

Moral Studies is outdated. It has been decades since students are needed to memorise the 36 moral values. Even a single word misspelled or left out leave students with zero marks. If one doesn't memorise, don’t even expect a B+. Basically, it's rote learning (in China!) where we have to understand the content as long as the right moral values and definitions are matched to the questions.

The History textbook is poorly written. The arrangements of facts are in total snafus. Trying to locate a fact takes quite me sometime since it is flooded with fillers and 'propagandas,' advocating or shall I say attempt to manipulate students (in the sense of beliefs). Absurd, yes. As the speed-reader I am, I find it hard to retain the facts I read through since they're all around the place! I suppose I'll never see a refined textbook since it's my last year (or it's never going to happen?)

Biology Physics Chemistry - why do we even have a Paper 3 that promotes rote learning, again? Memorizing answering techniques, again. Section B is all about writing the experimental procedures you have memorised. There's no emphasis on application and practicality of knowledge.

I wouldn't say I like memorizing but pure science is pretty much about that in secondary schools other than problem solving. So, here comes the high order thinking skills (HOTS or also known as KBAT). Phew, I see more of 'Let's predict what's in the marking scheme.'

The marking scheme for everything seems to be changing every year (for quality assurance sake? God knows). When is it going to be consistent like SAT?

Some students did excel in their studies but ended up being rewarded with nothing other than a Sixth Form offer. Racial discrimination in Malaysia is critical. Certain ethnics aren't getting the privilege despite having the potential to change the world. Read this article: Straight A's Student Didn't Make The Cut For His Dream Course Despite 5 Years Of Hard Work and Chinese girl achieved 11A + success in SPM, is one of Perak's top students, but was rejected by the Public Service (JPA) scholarship.

Again, another Malaysian girl who was rejected for a JPA scholarship made headlines when she was one the researchers who found a potential solution to superbugs.

Education may be the silver bullet to many problems but Malaysia's proves me otherwise. Off par.

Those are my two cents about our education system. Let's hope for the best! God bless me for SPM 17'.

Keadaan Normal Sesi Temuduga

Ahli Panel: Boleh kenalkan nama dan butiran diri anda.

Anda: Ya, nama saya Ali, umur 28 tahun.

Selesai.

Kiranya, jangan sekadar cakap sahaja.

Tip Tambahan - Tambah Kepetahan Bersuara

Cerita pengalaman dari kilang A

Cerita pengalaman dari kilang B

Dan seterusnya.

Motif saya sekarang.

Why Do We Need to Study - Guest PostGuest Post by Syed Shaff

So wait... why do we have to learn this again?

Ketentuan ilahi?

Atau pun sistem rancangan kerajaan yang salah?

Jawapannya, dua-dua bukan.

Pernah kawan saya sendiri cakap, ‘kan bagus kalau aku belajar mekanikal, dan kerja pun dalam bahagian mekanikal’

Bagi saya sendiri, kalau kehidupan kita ditentukan begitu, ibarat kurang sikit untungnya.

Seperti contoh.

Ikutkan pengalaman saya sendiri.

Kita ambil contoh situasi kalau anda tinggal menyewa bersama kawan.

Makan RM 450 (ambil kira kalau RM 15 sehari)
Bulanan Motor RM 200
Bulanan rumah atau sewa bilik RM 200
Bil telefon RM 150

Is this a direct response to the government's budget cut in higher education funding? Or is it a faculty specific (money-making) initiative to take advantage of top 35 in the world university rankings by faculty: engineering & technology? In particular the top 23 in the world university rankings by subject: engineering - electrical?

This Facebook post was first posted on July 9th 2016. It went viral again recently. Ooi Kok Hin:

My friend jumped from the 15th floor last night. An hour ago, I stood there near the spot, looking up to his window.

Of course, it's the 15th floor. How can I forget that all along? I've been there when I was 8-9 years old. We were buddies in the same school in the same neighborhood.

Our neighborhood isn't the kindest there is. There are gangs, which often flourish in a low-income community. Where and who else can you hang out with after school, if not the gangs? He and I hang out with the same circle.

In standard 4, I got a lucky break and was put in the first class of the school. Life, companions, and interests in the first class are distinctly different from the second-last class (The only thing we almost always look forward to was to "settle" a dispute after school hours. Or role-playing WWF at the back when the teacher is not around)

We drifted apart. In the past 10 years, I slowly became the person most of you know today. He plunged deeper and deeper to the dark hole: gangs, illegal stuff, lokaps.

You know how our achievements isn't entirely ours? My family always have my back, my friends and teachers are there for me, my cousins paid for my Form 5 tuition. They are good influence and provide the conducive environment for me to grow.

If we shouldn't take entire credits for our success, we shouldn't absorb all the blame for our failures. I've been asked a couple of times, and I've asked myself this too, "When and where did it go all wrong for this friend? Why did he choose this unforgivable, no future route?"

It's not that people like him have much choices, anyway. It's a problem in our society. Those who dropped out of the system are left to fend for themselves entirely. It was in the news recently that a group of JPA scholars are raising public donation to fund their million-ringgit overseas education. Do you realize this is a problem because you are privileged enough to have the problem?

People like my friend: flung school, only manages conversational-level Malay and very little English, his mom ran away with his sister, his parents divorced. It's all a vicious cycle, one bad thing reinforced another and he plunged further. To a point he could not be reached.

It's crazy. We were just kids back then. If I knew how it would turn out, what would I say to him when we were 9-years old? Maybe I will ask about his ambition, what does him want to do in life.

We met once last year. He asked me for money. When there's a second time, I was afraid there will be a third, and create dependency. I became almost afraid of my friend, but I stood my ground. Why that last call has to be about me telling him I just started working and couldn't continue to give him money? Why didn't I invite him for coffee? Maybe it isn't money that could have saved him.

What do I know. We were from the same school from the same neighborhood. Had some things in life got placed differently, I could've gone down that route too. It isn't just about individual choices, but also the situation, environment, support & help from others, and lucky breaks that separate our fortune.

Take time to remember what others have done for and to us. Those who have done well in life do not make it on their own. Similarly, those who do not make it don't fail on their own. The people and the environment in their life failed them, too.

We should all be kinder. God knows what the others are going through when they come to us for help.

Let's just live fully and deeply while the brief candle lasted, okay?

I could relate to the part where he was a second-last class in school then went to to first class. I was from a middle low income family where both my parents were illiterate. When I got lucky and was first put into the first class during Primary Four, I was shocked at how most of my friends in the same class have parents that are so concerned about their education and arranged them to multiple "best" quality tuition classes. For me I even had to repeatedly plead my parents for permission to go to just one tuition class, obviously due to the cost issue, and I had to find a tuition class near my house by myself.

Educated parents look after and provide for their kids' education while poor-family parents ignored this. It leads to two completely different life paths for their kids, unless of course the kids got lucky like Ooi and yours truly.

It seems like Ooi Kok Hin was a JPA scholarship receiver from his article "Privileged life of JPA scholars" published on the now defunct The Malaysian Insider:

Every year the Public Service Department (JPA) scholarship, and the university admission process, causes a ruckus.

The script is always the same: some excellent straight A students do not get the scholarship (or the course they wanted), the media reports make waves in the social media, and the cycle repeats the following year.

To be sure, this is not a negligible issue. This is a systemic, structural issue that should have been corrected long ago. But this problem is not the focus of this article.

Rather, I want to shine light on the lesser known aspects of this scholarship. The following account is just my personal observation, which may not be generalised for all JPA students.

I am also informed that the new JPA scholarship criteria and terms of contract are different from those of my batch, so take my account for whatever it is worth.

I come from a low-middle income family. My family live in a small flat and I do not have my own room.

We are not poor, but we are not rich either. Back when I was in secondary school, we did not own a car, we never had a family trip, and both my parents have full-time jobs.

When I was in Form 4, somehow an idea was planted into my mind. I dreamed of earning a scholarship that will allow me to study overseas and see the “outside world”.

There are many scholarships, but the most obvious candidate is the JPA scholarship.

The reason boiled down to quantity. There can be as many as 1,500 JPA overseas scholarships per year (or more).

There is an additional 2,000 JPA local scholarships. Compared to other sponsors such as Bank Negara, Petronas, or YTL, JPA is probably the only sponsor which provides over a thousand spots (opportunities).

For most of students, JPA scholarship is our best bet for a scholarship.

Some of us cannot apply for Mara scholarships, which further increases the importance of JPA scholarship as the only realistic avenue for scholarship for those of us who are not all-rounders or super top students.

I know of adults who were previously JPA scholars, so it is probable that JPA scholarship has been around for several decades.

Tens of thousands of (once) young Malaysians have been sponsored to pursue their tertiary education at home and abroad.

I applied for four scholarships after getting my SPM result. JPA was the only sponsor which called me up for an interview.

I remember it was held at Kepala Batas because that was the stronghold of the previous prime minister. During the group interview, we were asked one question in English and another question in Malay.

During my time, JPA scholars received their contract upon successful application and were required to enrol in prep-colleges (Taylor’s College, INTEC, Sunway etc).

After one to two years at those colleges (during which we have to maintain a specified CGPA), we are sent to study at a foreign university.

When I took the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Ohio, US, we made a transit at Narita, Tokyo. That was the first time I’ve ever stepped foot in a foreign land (Keep in mind that I never even get into Thailand or Singapore previously).

Like a village kid who just got into a big city, I was amazed by Japanese courtesy and facilities.

During both our studies at local prep college and foreign university, JPA scholars are given rental allowance and monthly expenditure.

Tuition fees are paid by Putrajaya and we do not have to take a single cent of loan. We basically have everything provided to us.

Occasionally, I come across statements by fellow JPA scholars that the allowance is not enough. The most vivid memory was when a senior JPA scholar at my university told newly arrived students that the allowance was too little.

I too wish for an allowance increase, but scaring off the juniors like that isn’t the right thing to do. Fact is, we are already being given everything.

Rent and monthly allowances are enough for decent living. If you want to eat outside every time, go shopping every weekend, or go travel every semester break, you have to work and earn the money to do so.

Quite frankly, too many JPA scholars have taken for granted the scholarship which we so determinedly and passionately pursued in the past.

We complain every time the JPA officer is slow to get back to our emails, but we never say a word of thanks when the allowance is deposited on time, every time.

We criticise the state of our country, the lack of economic opportunities, and the “backwardness” of our countrymen.

But we forget that we are the ones who are given the opportunities to enjoy quality education and to graduate debt-free, and in return, we will lift our countrymen upwards – not looking down at them.

We say we are too qualified for certain jobs in Malaysia. But without the scholarship funded by the people and given to us by the sponsors who trusted us, do we have the qualifications we now have?

I’m not asking everybody to return and serve the country. Sometimes you can contribute better from the outside, depending on your field of expertise and available opportunities.

Plus, most JPA scholars never served their bond anyway because the civil service is bloated.

There is too much supply (of JPA scholars) and too little demand (vacancies in the civil service), so many JPA scholars have to find their own jobs.

No other country on earth sponsored so many of her citizens every year to pursue higher education at home and abroad.

Welfare states provide free tertiary education, but do not sponsor their students to study abroad in so many numbers. And everybody pays 30-40% tax.

At the Ohio State University, Malaysians make up the fourth largest international population behind China, India, and South Korea.

Most of the international students pay their own tuition fees, while easily over half of the Malaysians are sponsored by either JPA or Mara.

American students take up college loans which they will have to work and pay off for the next 20 years of their life.

Our neighbour down south, Singapore, is well known as a talent hub. To its credit, Singapore knows how to attract and retain talents.

Even several of our MPs are the beneficiaries of scholarships provided by the Singaporean government. But meritocracy has its cost too. Singapore provides scholarships for the best and brightest, local and (especially) foreign students.

Malaysia, on the other hand, provides scholarships on a large scale to its own citizens continuously for several decades.

Sure, there are many things to be fixed with the system and too many are left out.

But as it is, if you are a Malaysian citizen, you know that there is always an opportunity for you to chase your dreams if you work hard enough, with the help of a bit of luck.

Even if you do not get a scholarship, tertiary education in Malaysia is much more affordable than developed countries.

Even after you adjust the currency rate and household income, Malaysians can afford to obtain education if they want it.

There is also the MyBrain initiative, which offers scholarships for Malaysians to pursue Masters and PhD.

We are lucky in the sense that Malaysia is still a developing country which needs to grow its talents.

In America, the pool is crowded and PhD holders are working as adjunct professors with minimal pay and job security. In Malaysia, we are giving money to people to study PhD.

I know there are things in Malaysia which could, and should, have been much better. But in the midst of our complaints and political differences, let us not forget to appreciate the many good things that our country has which other countries don’t (Besides the food, of course).

At the bottom of the article, I have listed a number of scholarship websites. Hopefully more Malaysians get to enjoy quality education and appreciate the opportunity given to us by others.

To fellow JPA scholars, “Pandang langit, jangan lupa tanah”. You and I are not entitled to the privilege which we enjoy today.

The money could have been used to build schools or invest in someone else’s life. But we are the ones who get to enjoy this privilege.

Let’s carry ourselves to the best of our ability and show some return on investment through our character and achievements.

Cilisos on "here’s how much school teachers actually earn in Malaysia":

Rosie, 46, a secondary school teacher in rural Kedah -> RM5,000 with allowances reaching up to RM1,400, including housing allowance, elaun kerajaan and other things.

Laila, 27, a private school teacher in the central region -> basic of RM1,800 monthly with RM300 allowance

Akmal, 27, a primary school teacher in rural Sabah -> RM2,200 monthly with special allowance for staying in isolation

Asma, 33, a special needs teacher in Kedah -> upwards of RM3,000 monthly

Kannan, age not revealed, a teacher at a Tamil government school in Kelantan -> RM4,500 monthly

Ching Yee, 33, a teacher at a Chinese government school in KL -> RM4,500 monthly

There are also yearly increments that government teachers enjoy. Kannan told us that last year, teachers got a double increment, and each year teachers enjoy a pay raise of not less than RM200.

Kannan had been teaching for six years, Rosie for seven and Ching Yee for ten, so their salaries are somewhat understandable. However, things aren’t as peachy for private school teachers like Laila who has been a teacher for 3 years.

But they don’t get paid for overtiming

However different their pay schemes are, all 6 teachers have something in common: none of them receive any overtime, even if they work more. Remember when you go to school and SPM or PMR is around the corner and teachers will sometimes hold extra classes after school hours? Yeah, that’s free. Teachers who hang around for club activities and uniformed bodies march practices? That’s free as well.

To those who want to be a teacher in Malaysia, these figures are useful insight into the current pay of teachers in various parts of Malaysia. If you do the maths, you will quickly realize many teachers who teach private tuition classes (regardless of home tuition or at tuition centers) after schools are actually making a lot more compared to their main job salary.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517471716484302258.post-46647346401186846892017-05-18T19:09:00.000+08:002017-05-17T19:10:27.158+08:00True Story of the Struggle of Non-bumi Malaysian in Applying for Education Programme Reserved for Bumiputera: UPU Asasi

Shi Hao:

hi, im about to tell you my story as a non-bumi in malaysia. my attempt applying upu asasi

noted that this thread is just my experience and I do not intend to involve politics or other else. I just want to tell you my story.

okay. saya budak sbp. sejak f1 dah duduk asrama satu malaysia, kl. berjauhan dengan family yg duduk kelate

niat hanya satu je: saya nak masuk university awam, saya nak masuk ipta. ibu bapa saya tak mampu nak kasi study private u

so there i was. saya nak dapatkan kokurikulum, masa tu saya start belajar music, saya involve dalam semuaa koku

my academic pun i stay strong, nak belajar betul2 tanak hampakan harapan ibu bapa

so masa f1, f2 saya bergaul dengan semua budak. budak nakal, budak rempit, budak pandai member semua aku ada.

masa f2 tetiba ada sorang senior ni dia bagitau aku: kita budak non-bumis ni, susah nak masuk asasi upu nanti.

aku pun macam okay, fine. aku berusaha jugak. f2 aku involve banyak gila benda yg aku tak pernah buat

masatu ada audition koir kebangsaan, aku nak masuk, konon dapat naikkan my koku marks. tapi tempat practice dia jauh, aku pun tak tau mana

okay later i pun quit la koir tu. tapi i still involve banyak dalam music. dari situ la i found my passion, i dapat markah koku banyak

pastu pt3, bersyukur la dapat straight A (10A). sebabkan experience perit kat asrama lama, aku pindah satu sbp dalam kl

sbp ni dia takde music lain. dia ada caklempong je (aku pasti ramai tak tau amende cakelmpong ni). this is a MALAY traditional music inst.

aku masuk team caklem tu. sebab aku minat music. dari noob, sampailah sekarang boleh kata dah pro la

aku belajar sungguh2, in academic or koku, dua2 aku nak excel. sebb satu je : aku nak masuk ipta asasi

caklempong i sampai tahap international, science project pun i sampai singapore dapat best oral presentation

maths olympiad singapore i dapat gold award, public speaking pun dapat champion kat thailand.

i pun jadi leader caklempong team dapat no2 seluruh malaysia. semua tak percaya "cina tu la sia main caklem laju gila" aku tau

okay habis koku, ni akademik

my akademik sepanjang duduk sekolah boleh kata excel, sentiasa top10. spm i dapat straight A semua

so lepas dapat result spm, seperti semua budak sekolah, i pun beria2 apply upu

aku ingat masatu aku memang confident: semua aku ada, semua aku boleh apply. kelayakan aku memang tip top. tapi aku lupa

satu je aku tak layak

my skin colour

aku ni cina, asasi ipta ni dia bagi 3 pilihan je : asasi pintar, asasi upm, asasi upnm

dalm 8 options tu, aku apply tiga ni je, yang lain semua hentam aku letak diploma sains

tapi masatu aku tak takut: im sure with my kelayakan mesti dapat punya aku ingat

semalam, result upu keluar. guess what? seperti kebanyakan non-bumis, aku dapat benda lain, bukan asasi

noted that asasi yang diberi kat malaysia ni banyak. tapi kami tak diberikan pilihan:

tapi aku rasa serba bersalah kepada aku yang masih f1-f5. aku berusaha selama 5 tahun, crushed in a moment.

bukan senang berjauhan dengan family, especially masa f1 yang baru mengenali dunia. aku sanggup berkorban my years and my happiness

tapi adakah anda makbulkan my happiness?

aku rasa betul apa senior tu yang bagitau, maybe malaysia doesnt need us

aku sayang gila kat malaysia, aku mengharumkan nama malaysia di luar negara.

masa exchange student luar negara, aku tak pernah cakap aku ni CHINESE, aku cakap aku MALAYSIAN, tapi belajar bahasa cina

tapi sekarang baru tau status aku sebagai seorang non-bumi.

sekarang ni aku rasa aku bodoh gila. mungkin sebab aku tak cukup berusaha, mungkin aku ni tak layak

tapi aku bersangka baik, mungkin asasi ni bukan rezeki aku, ada banyak kemungkinan. kita manusia, insan biasa, tak dapat tahu masa depan

sebab tu aku pilih masuk matrikulasi kelantan. aku tolak semua scholarship overseas, sebab aku nak berbakti kat tanah air

tapi sekarang ni aku dah confuse, adakah malaysia appreciate aku sebagai seorang insan yg berguna?

Saddening reminder that we still have a very long way to go to be One Malaysian. For non-bumi, this is just another of the many cases of bright young Malaysians being denied the best education opportunities just because of their non-bumiputera status.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517471716484302258.post-63661119963155270782017-05-17T16:53:00.000+08:002017-05-17T16:54:15.439+08:005 reasons why people "invest" in money game & why you should not judge...Savwee Investment: If you have friends who have been scammed, read this:

JJPTR is not the only money game that collapsed lately. In this domino like collapse, many "Investors" have lost all their savings.

One told me "I thought if I would diversify among these money games, I would be safe. They said they are "investing" for us by doing business & trading forex and there is monthly return, so it seems legit".

JJPTR Get Rich Quick Money Game Scam

First of all, you have to understand the money game operator's strategies:

Give them a believable story.

Give them proof that the concept work.

Give them some sweet reward upfront.

Ask them to invest only small amount.

Why those strategies?

Because they know, if you invest small first, the resistance is low, and when you make some money, you will come in big. That's when they shut down. They also create a story that you WANT to believe. "I am here to save ordinary human".

For the trained eyes, It's obvious that this is a scam. However.. I completely understand why people would believe in money games.

1. They are desperate.

Malaysia's economy is not as good for the middle class and small business operators. (Many really struggle with the implementation of GST). I've known people who sold their business & remortgaged their homes to invest in these money games (only to lose it all). People are desperate to try anything that promises to change their life for the better. Yet, they do not know how to invest in proper investments like property or stocks or have much knowledge in business. What else can they do?

2. Greed & Peer Pressure.

20% per month return. Who doesn't want it?

These people put you into wechat groups and share "motivation" message, jokes on how much they are making from this scheme & how stupid are the "non-believers". It reinforces group thinking and incite greed. They even dare to use quotes from Jack Ma to justify why this "opportunity" is good for them. These people have got the story half right, they are right about the importance to invest & do new things, but wrong method.

Instagram & Facebook also plays a role here. So many young people are flashing how good their life is, travelling first class, driving sports cars, having lavish dinner and etc. This creates imbalance in the heart of those who have not and fuel the desperation to try anything that can help them. "Forex" is used as the story because people think traders make money very quickly. Just type forex on instagram and you will find tons of "forex millionaires"(pretenders)

3. Low capital requirement, high return.

Most people think to invest in anything else, you need a huge capital. That is not true but it's commonly believed. So this "opportunity" that require small capital seem to be their only option.

4. Lack of experience.

Anyone who is a professional investor or businessmen will know. It is impossible to make 20% per month consistently. The greatest investors in the world make 20-30% per YEAR. The best businesses make up to 40% per year return on equity. To have a 20% return per month is simply laughable for experienced investor.

The average folks do not know this.

5. "Second Chance" to make it.

Many of the investors are not longer young. One hidden motivation they have when they "invest" in these money games is, they are looking for a second chance to "make it" in life & in business. They want to be respected as an independent human being.

None of the above conditions are their fault.

In fact, if they "invest" in these money games, it likely reveal they have some unresolved inner stuggle. It is simply natural for someone in that condition to resort to extreme measures, even though deep down, they know it is too good to be true. Therefore, I urge you to treat those who were scammed with compassion rather than make them feel worse about themselves.

If they feel worse about themselves, the 5 reasons above will be strengthened and they will go through the whole ordeal again when a new "opportunity" arises. Interesting write-up on a noble teacher that goes above and beyond to provide the best for indigenous students in the country. Happy Teacher's Day!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517471716484302258.post-66874763205542331852017-05-15T23:45:00.000+08:002017-05-15T23:46:38.795+08:00How to become a best and outstanding student?Internationally, the standard phenomenon over the best students is that they are really advanced and know lots of Mathematics. Not sure, where it started but across the nations, the same point is considered. At most times, it tends to think whether the best students are ahead in knowledge and awareness or the scores decide the destiny.
I did mention about Maths but it is rather Science too which most East Asian countries pay attention. This has deliberated to the STEM talent and now progress to STEAM education which includes Arts along with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Just as we come to the topic we released that the best person to evaluate the outstanding students are their teachers themselves as all the teachers are somehow exposed to all level of students and the different ability individuals. When encountered with the high school teacher in a metro city in India, she was so clear to mention the outstanding student is the one who is advanced in all inclusive of the subjects, language, activity, discipline and they are much advanced compared to the others in same age group.

On keen observation over the toppers or the achievers, follow the pattern to see yourself transforming to the betterment.

Keep exploring more on the pieces of stuff you are proficient

Starting from scratch will not take you to the rocket speed but it is possible to have a good grasp of what you have already learnt and had them in your gray cells. Now think of ways you could explore the set of skills and try to outsmart. You may create a platform outside your classroom to gain more knowledge and bring it forward to your class to exhibit. This will draw attention to your skills and would strengthen your confidence.

You are outstanding, challenge yourself in new ways

This is exactly something you should crave for and it requires in-depth knowledge and understanding of the subject. Keep yourself in pace with the ever changing scenario and exploring a great many available resources you must build your mind sticking to challenge to new and advanced challenges. This could be a debate session for a language enthusiast, a creative presentation for the designer and what more get yourself set into the challenges of professionals.

Get interested in high-level discussion and complexity

Nothing can be worked on lacking interest. It is important to set a high level of interest and engage with the advanced learner and seniors. It may be something which we call to dig in deep to outsmart, Exactly! You are to show up some fascinating interest level and keep moving by reviewing yourself in the truly engaged complexities.

Choose something to excel based on your interest

This philosophy most commonly applies to all the tasks we do and particularly for the advanced learning students they need to think in the most creative way and have to show up to the global challenges. The exploration and the incorporating the skills in the chosen field need to be worked on the consistent basis. Such an involvement and the motivation can be experienced only when the subject is based on the interest. Undeniably, the learner who is keenly interested would work it up at the advanced level and get the brains of the outstanding student and would be able to generate competitive ideas.

Never ever get exhausted

This should be one among the most key points to be realized. As most of the advanced learners would stretch themselves from the normal working day and they would extend the schedule and constantly engage themselves in practicing new things and to achieve the set targets. We need to work on consistency basis and never let the minds set on the pinnacle reach where in you would not be able to extend. So, without losing interest and acquisition of the knowledge should take place for which able planning need to be concentrated.

Dear enthusiastic student, you may be all set to demonstrate your extraordinary ability and prove to an outstanding student. For some reason, you can perform it better with some guidance from your teachers or parents. Now, all that you have to do is owe to your mentor over your challenges and gain their assistance.

What your mentors can do for you?

You mentor can better identify your strengths and help you dive into the subject. They help you choose your choice and make you adapt to the challenges.

Your mentor can get you integrated to the technology providing you the bridge and help you with time to explore innovative and academic contents from the web world.

They have kept you associated with other advanced learner and can make you work together with them in projects, groups, and studies.

They can accelerate you to the toughest engagement and they are best to strategies the various learning skills in students.
Your mentors can help you in comparing with your peer groups and update you with your missing comparative skills. This update will create a benchmark and aids you in better performance.

You mentor can set the goals and track the progress. They exactly know the reaching spot and the timeline. They help you preparing and motivating to achieve the goals.

As the goals are tangible they can help you in accounting the progress and keeping you in line with the schedules to win the plan.

Exploring is one aspect and creativity is another, your mentors are best to teach you creatively and help you in lateral thinking.

Indeed, it is also possible if you wish to transform to achievement without the adult intervention if you a quick in grasping, able to access the additional resources, stay responsible in the group, distract all the distractions, exercising the leadership in yourself, bringing self-initiative and strengthening your ability and aptitude. Most importantly able to self-evaluate periodically.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517471716484302258.post-21553440651614557542017-05-14T21:58:00.000+08:002017-05-16T22:00:34.168+08:00Most adults can't solve this Singapore's primary one Mathematics question, can you?

Malaysia Jr. NBA Programme

Following a successful visit in 2016, Jr. NBA Malaysia 2017 returned to Penang for the second consecutive year. This clinic reached 32 schools and 400 boys and girls – showing an increased figure that doubled from last year.

This year’s programme will reach more than 6,000 boys and girls at more than 200 schools, including a first time stop in Johor Bahru in search for local basketball talents to attend the Jr. NBA Selection Camp in Kuala Lumpur, moving them one step closer to being named 2017 Jr. NBA Malaysia All-Star!

With the increased interest from female youths in the sport, the programme has extended more slots for girls to achieve their dreams. The programme will culminate with eight boys and eight girls being named 2017 Jr. NBA Malaysia All-Stars. These standout campers will embark on a unique, overseas NBA experience together with their counterparts from Southeast Asia later in the year.

“This programme caught my attention and interest when my teacher informed me of the clinic. Watching my older brother actively playing basketball intrigued me to take part so that I can learn basketball skills and maybe challenge my brother to a game one day,” said Aufa Farzana from SMKA Perempuan Almashoor excitedly.

The Penang clinic culminated with the selection of 2 girls and 4 boys who will attend the Selection Camp in Kuala Lumpur from July 8 to 9.
“This is my first time playing basketball so being selected was certainly more than I could ask for. Watching female basketballers stirs me to pick up this sport because I admire the strength and charisma that they carry when they are in a game. After going through this clinic, I hope to represent my school one day,” said Yap Li Hui from SMK Taman Perwira.

The clinics were led by Joselito F. Vergara, along with coaches from the Westports Malaysia Dragons and the Ministry of Education (MOE) from Penang. Participants are trained in the fundamentals of basketball and learn about the importance of proper nutrition as well as the Jr. NBA’s core values of sportsmanship, teamwork, a positive attitude, and respect.

The Selection Camp in July 8 & 9 is a two day event made up of skill stations and clinics on the first day, followed by scrimmages and final selections on the second day. The top 32 boys and girls from the Selection Camp will be invited to participate in the Jr. NBA National Training Camp in Kuala Lumpur from July 28-30. The National Training Camp will once again be attended by a current or former NBA player.

The next stop for the Jr. NBA programme will be at Johor Bahru, Pei Chun High School on May 13 at 8:30am.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6517471716484302258.post-55913803859983937392017-05-07T10:40:00.002+08:002017-05-07T10:42:35.690+08:00Cuti Sekolah Hari Raya Puasa 24 Jun - 2 Julai 2017

UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA CONSTITUTIONAL DAY 2017

This year, the Federal Constitution marks its 60th anniversary since it was introduced in 1957, following the achievement of independence of our country. Therefore, the UM Consti Team hosted its primary annual event at the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya to celebrate this significant milestone of our Supreme Law of the land on 16th of April. The event theme was 60-Year Milestone of Constitutionalism: Are Your Rights all Right?

More than 90 participants, ranging from students of secondary school, matriculation, universities and colleges as well as others joined us together. The event was also graced by our sponsors with the Deputy Dean of UM Faculty of Law, Dr Nadhratul Wardah Binti Haji Salman. The event officially commenced with the officiating ceremony, witnessed by the Director of UM Consti Team, Ms Wong Kar Ling and the Organizing Committee (OC) President, Mr Neoh Kai Sheng.

The mood of the audience was quickly alleviated once the Bar Council Constitutional Law Committee, took over the stage to conduct a workshop about our Federal Constitution themed Back to Basics. Following th workshop was the Forum entitled with the topic: Balance between The Freedom and Limitation. It was our great honour to invite Constitutional Law expert and human rights expert to speak on the articles of Federal Constitution.

After lunch, a number of academic discussions themed The Anatomy of the Constitutional Institutions: Structure, Duties and Powers were conducted where participants were divided into small groups to ease the tutoring and encourage the participants to voice out their questions and opinions. With the help from third year and final year students of UM Faculty of Law as facilitator, the discussion was fruitful and beneficial to all participants. Finally, the event ended with a closing ceremony, whereby the OC Vice President gave a speech to sum up the event.

We sincerely believe that this one day programme achieved its aim to raise awareness and educate the people, not just law students, on the roles and mechanics of the Federal Constitution, and how the Supreme law of the land protect our fundamental liberties. The UM Consti Team will strive to be better and play its part to promote constitutionalism through more likewise events in the near future.

She has been active in extracurricular activities and has won awards in a number of national competitions, including the National Music Competition (Champion), the Malaysian Carnival Carnival (Group Champion), the National Chemistry Test (Excellence Award), Taichi society, AJK of Chinese Orchestra and Sinchew Daily student journalist.

She said that she was informed by the official website on April 26 that the scholarship application has failed, which she has then appealed to the authorities, but on the other side, the "P9A bursary" program submission deadline in on May 22. She worries that the result of the appeal can not be released before this deadline.

She said that she did not know whether the result of the appeal could be released within 20 days because if she accepts the "P9A Sponsorship" program, she would abandon the opportunity to study abroad, which is always her dream. Asked if she failed the appeal, what was the worst plan, she said she would stay at the UTP in Electronic Engineering.

Wen Huijuan said that her daughter achieve full A in the junior high school assessment test (PT3) and small six assessment exam (UPSR), moreover this SPM which she took 2 extra subjects was her best performance, she want to get the JPA scholarship to overseas study, if she only awarded "P9A bursary" program, what is the difference between she and the other 9A + students? "Her daughter is a science student but chose to take Chinese and Accounting subject, which accounting is also her self-study subject. In order to go to Germany for further study, she did a lot of hard work.

Liu Guonan said that the National Scholarship Program sponsored 20 top students to study in the top ten universities in the world, in addition, Japan, South Korea, France and Germany special program is sponsored to 200 special students in the engineering field.

He said that the total number of 220 outstanding students will receive the above sponsorships, but in the 2016 SPM, A+ candidates are only 102 or 1.94%, so it is difficult to understand why Zheng Xinyi is not offered a place in the scholarships.

He urged the applicant to appeal at the latest on May 2, and then arrange a copy of the submission, as he will assist and follow-up one by one, and forward them to the MCA ministers.

Identical incidents like this one happen every single year around April and May after the SPM result releases and JPA scholarship application closes. It has happened annually and will continue to happen in the future that it is no longer newsworthy to those of us that read this again and again. It is always casted as a non-bumiputera issue and get assisted by MCA or MIC reported mostly in Chinese, Tamil and sometimes English news media outlets. Potential political publicity gain aside, it is extremely troubling that the brightest minds in the country denied the best government sponsored education opportunities overseas simply on the basis of race.

One practical advice to those SPM candidates aiming to get JPA scholarships: don't put all your eggs in one basket. Make sure you apply many prestigious scholarships from different public and public providers even if you score straight A+'s.
