Malaysian companies never reply to internship application emails

Malissa Ali:
Currently, I am in my process of applying for an internship both in the UK and Malaysia. I notice one difference.

Every single company in the UK that I applied to replied me. Literally every single one. No matter if I proceed to the next stage or not. When I didn't succeed in my application, they would email me and tell me why. Some even suggested me websites and programs to join so that I improve my employability.

In contrast, every single company in Malaysia except MNCs, none of them, literally none replied me. Yes, I am not that selective, I consider every opportunity including small and medium size companies. I hope that I get to do an internship in Malaysia so that I can come back this summer, but seems like it will not be the case.

Alright, I am not complaining that I am not impressive enough for your business, but it's sad to compare how we appreciate our human capital.

I am a 2nd-year student who's searching for an internship that is not even compulso…

UKM & UiTM to Kickstart Gap Year Programme in September 2017 - Higher Education Minister

New Straits Times:
Two universities have been identified to kickoff the Gap Year programme initiated by the Higher Education Ministry beginning this September.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said the two universities are Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

The programme, he said, will allow undergraduates to take a year off their studies to pursue their interests, mainly in volunteering programmes and temporary industrial stints. From the news report, it seems like the (at least in the current form for the inaugural) gap year programme is a closely controlled programme which undergraduates can only choose to take leave from study to join certain pre-approved list of volunteering programmes or internship?
"For one year, students can participate in volunteerism or do jobs they are interested in.

"For the upcoming programme, we are working with the police, army, JPAM (Civil Defence Force) and the National Service programme to…

JPA's New 9A+ Sponsorship Programme Only for SPM Students with FULL A+ for ALL Subjects Taken

The Star Online:
The launching of a new scholarship – the 9A+ Sponsorship Programme – should have given a new lease of hope to SPM students but now, they are left in a state of despair.

According to the Public Service Department’s (PSD) eSila portal, only students with full A+ for all subjects they sat for are entitled to the sponsorship.

The only silver lining was that the National Sponsorship Programme, which funds the top 20 SPM scorers to study in the most renowned universities in the world, will now consider 102 students who obtained their results on Thursday.

PSD director-general Datuk Seri Zainal Rahim Seman, in a text message to The Star, said: “Will clarify this issue soon.”

It was announced last year that the Graduate Bursary Programme will cease this year. But the new stringent condition has taken many by surprise. This caught everyone by a surprise, especially those SPM 2016 candidates that scored 9A+ but a few A's as they took more than nine subjects hoping that …

Goods and Services Tax (GST) now imposed on research grants - Malaysia Customs Department

Malay Mail Online:
Not only must public universities contend with budget cuts, but academics are also getting less money for research as most grants now attract the Goods and Services Tax (GST). [...]

According to the Customs Department, most research grants ― whether they were from the government, universities, private companies or statutory bodies ― would be subject to the GST, but some would not be taxed, especially if the grant was between a ministry and a statutory body. [...]

Public universities had their combined operating budgets for this year cut by about 19 per cent, or RM1.5 billion, with 10 of them facing massive cuts ranging from over 10 per cent to over 31 per cent.

Local daily Berita Harian reported Monday the Malaysian Academic Association Congress as saying that almost 6,000 lecturers, including professors, did not have their contracts renewed since last year due to financial constraints at public universities.

But the MOHE reportedly rebutted the claim, saying that…
