Muhyiddin: PTPTN defaulters costing new borrowers

Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says the government's decision to reduce the amount of new loans given by the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) is to cope with the growing number of applications and poor repayment by previous borrowers. Bagaimanapun, katanya yang juga adalah menteri pelajaran, sebab utama adalah kegagalan sebilangan besar peminjam membayar balik menyebabkan tabungan sedia ada tidak dapat bertahan.

PTPTN Cuts Down Student Loan Amount 5% (Public Universities/IPTA) to 15% (Private Universities/IPTS) with Immediate Effect

Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN) Sin Chew Daily: National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) announced the adjustment of the amount of student loans, and the study loan amount will be reduced by 5% for all students in public universities, while 15% for private tertiary students with immediate effect. Medical courses are not affected by this change. This was reportedly due to government's understanding that tuition fees of medical courses are expensive, hence no adjustment to the student study loan amount. The justification for this change (which has been in effect since 1st November 2014) was reportedly to benefit more students as more students will have their PTPTN study loan application accepted. The most impacted students will be those studying and staying in Klang Valley such as undergraduates from University of Malaya, KL due to the rising cost of living.
